Amazing book helps those suffering from food addiction lose weight and more!

One of my reasons for starting this blog is to show people how easy it is to follow an SOS-free diet. In case you've never seen that acronym before except in relationship to summoning help when lost at sea, SOS stands for sugar, oil, and salt (or salt, oil, and sugar, if you prefer).

I can't give an exact timeline of when the acronym SOS entered the plant-based vernacular, but more than a decade ago, I attended a lecture given by Dr. Joel Fuhrman when he first published Eat to Live. I want to say I first heard "SOS" in reference to food during his lecture, but I can't be certain. Previously, I read Dr. John McDougall's books Maximum Weight Loss and The McDougall Program, where he promotes a diet that avoids oil, animal products, and high-fat plant foods and allows for minimal amounts of sugar and salt.

In 2010, I met Chef AJ at a mutual friend's birthday party. We sat next to each other and started talking about diets and one of us mentioned Dr. Fuhrman's discussion board based on his book. Chef AJ told me she taught classes on how to cook and bake without sugar, oil, and salt, using whole, unprocessed fruit and vegetables. I was ready to sign up immediately! The class was amazing, and I ended up taking several more of her classes over the years. I've followed her progress, too, as she lost more and more weight by cutting out nuts and dried fruit from her diet, eventually developing a program with fitness trainer (and so much more), John Pierre.

In April of this year, she published her book, The Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss. In it, she tells her story about her struggle with weight and the steps she took to recover from processed food addiction. The recipes included in the book are free of salt, sugar, alcohol, flour, and oil and are delicious and easy to make. Plus, they don't include any high-fat plant foods such as nuts, seeds, and avocados, which can trigger food addiction AND prevent weight loss in those of us lucky enough to be great at fat storage.

Even if you relish the thought of spending time in your kitchen less than paying taxes, you'll get so much out of this book. Some of the recipes have only a few ingredients, and they'll amaze friends and family. When I made the Sweet Potato Chili for a Vegan Toastmasters meeting, the members gobbled it up. And it contained NO sugar, oil, or salt, but please don't tell anyone.

Since starting the Ultimate Weight Loss program, I've lost about 20 pounds and maintained it for more than a year. Before joining UWL in 2016, I gained and lost the same 20 pounds in twenty years and could never get below 130 pounds for more than a few weeks, but it was only when I started following this program that I was able to reach my ideal weight and keep it off. (This was after losing about 40 pounds by going vegan and then following a low-fat, plant-based diet such as Dr. McDougall's mentioned earlier.)

So what are the Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss? To find out, you'll have to buy the book! You can also check out Chef AJ's Weight Loss Wednesday videos on YouTube, where she shares her secrets and delicious recipes. Thanks for reading!
